What is CPR?

CPR (Cardiopulmonary Respiration) is a technique used to keep oxygen flowing throughout the body when the heart becomes disrupted.  Many instances can require CPR techniques to keep the blood flowing to the vital organs while the heart is unable to.  This technique has been proven to save countless lives throughout the world and could be a vital tool to have in case of an emergency.

Galena Sport Physical Therapy in Reno is currently holding CPR classes through our Certified Athletic Trainer Carol Mass.  She is an Indianapolis native who graduated from Indiana State University.  Carol offers first time certifications as well as re-certifications through the American Red Cross Association and the American Heart Association.  Through this CPR course in Reno, you will review and become familiar with skills involved with:

  • CPR
  • AED's
  • First Aid
  • Cuts
  • Burns
  • Choking
  • Shock and Anaphylactic Shock
  • Stroke
  • Heat Stroke
  • Splinting
  • Asthma Attacks
  • Hypothermia

What to expect at a CPR training class:

There are three parts to the class.

  1. Information: in this portion, you will be able to discern what to do in a situation that may require your immediate action.  Whether it is a cut or someone becomes unconscious, many situations will require attention that could save someone's life, and the information gained in the CPR training course will help prepare you to be a valuable asset in this instances
  2. Hands on training: Through this section, you will be instructed to use a practice manikin to simulate the up to date CPR techniques.  There is a mandatory skills section that requires the instructor to provide feedback and assess the necessary hands on skills in order to acquire a CPR certification.
  3. Testing: After acquiring the knowledge and managing the skills developed for CPR, there is a small test about the process and your involvement in emergency situations.

Once these three requisites are completed, you will receive a certified CPR card in the mail.

Types of classes:

Three different courses are available:

  1. Full CPR and first aid certification: All work is done with a certified instructor.
  2. Split course: Half the course is done online at your own pace, then testing and skills are done with the instructor.
  3. Basic Life Support (BLS) CPR for the health care professional: this course applies to all persons working in the health care field and does not include First aid.
